As someone who is neurodivergent and has several invisible disabilities I struggle to cope with life's everyday pressures that able-bodied people take in their stride.
When I lost my job and found myself on disability, I used it as an opportunity to do the one thing I always dreamed of, that I hadn't had the time or energy for before, and became a writer.
However, after I published my first book I found myself struggling to keep up with able-bodied people once more – self-promotion, social media, marketing, networking demand time and energy I can't spare and require a budget I simply don't have on a disability allowance.
On top of that as a slow writer (it took me six years to write my book) I have to compete for visibility against writers who produce a new book every few months.
It has left me feeling disillusioned and frustrated. I'm sure I'm not the only writer disadvantaged by illness or disability, so I decided to create a space dedicated to disabled and chronically ill writers. A place where our books can be showcased without being drowned out by hype and big budgets and readers with disabilities can easily find books that resonate with them. In addition writers with disabilities will be able to access resources to help them on their publishing journey.
I am starting to build the website for the DBA Collective and require initial content to populate the website.
SEEKING AUTHORS WITH DISABILITY AND CHRONIC ILLNESS
Part of the website will be a directory of authors with disabilities and/or chronic illness. If you would like to be added, please submit your details below.
All those who sign up before 1 February 2026 will receive one year's free membership. (I'll be keeping fees as low as possible so membership won't be more than approximately US$50 a year when it is activated).
For further updates on the progress of the website, be sure to follow the social media channels below.
